Our May 2024 sales kit will help you talk to clients about protecting their most valuable asset: their paycheck.

Payday is the best day of the week - but what happens when those paychecks stop due to illness or injury? It's more common than your clients probably want to acknowledge. Scroll to page 30 of the kit and you'll see a few unsettling stats like this one: 72% of American employees live from paycheck to paycheck. So isn't it crucial to protect that asset and everything it does for your client and their family?

How to Use This Month’s Sales Kit

The easiest way to get started? Add a mention of DI to your sales calls and client meetings. As you do that, start bringing it up on social media with your prospects. The pre-made images in the kit can give you a head start there. It's a good idea to browse the kit and pull out questions, facts, or strategies you think will resonate with your clients. To get a quote, you can use the included quote form or just give us a call at 800-823-4852 and ask to speak to a brokerage manager about DI.

Last but not least, check out the DI workbook at the end of the kit titled "The Questions and Answers on Disability Insurance Workbook: A Step-by-Step Guide to Simple Answers for Your Complex Questions" by Tony Steuer and Maxwell Schmitz. It's designed for consumers, but has great information if you've never sold DI before. It covers needs analysis, policy selection and application, maintaining and updating a policy, and filing a claim.

Here are just a few stats in the kit that caught our eye:

  • Just over 1 in 4 of today's 20-year-olds will be disabled before retirement. Your clients probably don't understand just how much a disability could affect their earning potential - and their future retirement savings. Check out this example: a 35-year-old worker who makes $75,000 per year and becomes permanently disabled would lose up to $2.25 million in earnings through the age of 65. Yikes!
  • The average monthly benefit paid by Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 2022 was $1,483. And that's if your client's SSDI application is approved. According to the Social Security Administration, 67% of disability claims are denied on their first try.
  • Most disabilities are caused by illness, not an accident. According to MassMutual, the highest percentage of claims were prompted by musculoskeletal/connective tissue disabilities. The second highest percentage? Mental disorders. Accidents or injuries only resulted in 11% of MassMutual DI claims from 1972-2022.
  • Paying for one year of expenses due to a disability can wipe out nearly 13 years of savings. Scroll to page 38 in the kit to see the math on this one. In a nutshell, the example looks at a sample 30-year-old male making $75,000 per year and saving 5% annually ($3,750). If his monthly expenses add up to $4,000, a one-year disability would cost him $48,000, which is just about 13 years of savings. Ouch.
